I acquired a small book in portuguese, titled "Descobrindo o melhor do Jazz" = "Discovering the best of Jazz", by Stephen M. Stroff. It's interesting 'cause he describes Jazz evolution and its greatest stars, in 8 chapters, from Leadbelly, Joplin, New Orleans, etc till Marsalis, Lacy, Dirty Dozen etc . It isn't digited however for its interesting comments & recorded recommendatios and mainly for its small size (208 pages), I would dare to digit it, anyway, for our group of Jazz lovers. Obviously digiting quality wouldn't be the usual. I would like to hear form our fellows about it, if possible.

This collection of 50 or so biographies, plus a collection of shorter life stories in the "More ... to Remember" sections at the end of each main part, cannot hope to be a comprehensive narrative history of jazz. For that, you will need to look in the bibliography in the appendix for some suggestions. The select discography in the appendix offers a snapshot history of jazz on CD. It is by no means the whole picture, but sufficient to get a good idea of how the sound of jazz developed. Nevertheless, the lives of the men and women covered in this book are central to the development of jazz; if you read their profiles in sequence, much of the story of jazz itself will unfold. Among them are most of the innovative instrumentalists, bandleaders, and composers who shaped the music as it grew, and who kept its spirit of development alive and well nourished. The discography at the end of each profile will also guide you to CDs to hear how each individual's music progressed.

Exotic live birds perched in cages behind the bar. The midget master of ceremonies, 3'9" Pee Wee Marquette, dressed in a zoot suit and loud tie, smoked huge cigars and screeched mispronounced introductions into the microphone. And the jazz-struck young Crow would park in the bleachers till 4 am, blissfully enveloped by the heady music of Bird, Bud Powell, Max Roach, and a host of other jazz giants. From Birdland to Broadway is an enthralling insider's account of four decades of a life in jazz. Bill Crow, journeyman bass player, superb storyteller, and author of the successful Jazz Anecdotes, here narrates many moving and delightful tales of the pioneers of modern jazz he played with and was befriended by. We find Dizzy Gillespie, with whom Crow, because of prior commitments, regretfully declined steady work, dancing at the Royal Roost, Stan Getz sadly teetering on the brink of losing himself to drugs, and Harry Belafonte (known then as "the Cinderella Gentleman") running a lunch counter in New York's Sheridan Square between music dates. And we also witness many of the highlights of Crow's career, such as in 1955 when the Marian McPartland Trio (with Crow on bass) was named "Small Group of the Year" by Metronome; Crow playing with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet at venues like Storyville in Boston and Harlem's Apollo Theater (where they appeared with Dinah Washington); and the tour of the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman, a journey that might have been a high point of Crow's travels abroad but was marred by Goodman's legendary mistreatment of his band. Moving beyond jazz clubs to the Broadway concert pit and a variety of studio gigs in the '60s, Crow encounters actors such as Yul Brynner and pop-rock acts like Simon and Garfunkel. From the great to the near-great, from Billie Holiday to Judy Holliday, Bill Crow's wealth of personal anecdotes takes the reader from Birdland, to the Half Note, to the Playboy Club, to the footlights of Broadway. This revealing book is a marvelous portrait of the jazz world, told by someone who's been there.

I acquired a small book in portuguese, titled "Descobrindo o melhor do Jazz" = "Discovering the best of Jazz", by Stephen M. Stroff. It's interesting 'cause he describes Jazz evolution and its greatest stars, in 8 chapters, from Leadbelly, Joplin, New Orleans, etc till Marsalis, Lacy, Dirty Dozen etc .

Some time ago, an important daily news called JORNAL DO BRASIL published an interesting work dealing with his life altogether the development of Bossa Nova. This work came to public on its edition on 2001, June the 3rd, when João completed 70 years old.

For that, you will need to look in the bibliography in the appendix for some suggestions. The select discography in the appendix offers a snapshot history of jazz on CD. It is by no
ReplyDeletemeans the whole picture, but sufficient to get a good idea of how the sound of jazz developed. Nevertheless, the lives of the men and women covered in this book are central to the development of jazz; if you read their profiles in sequence, much of the story of jazz itself will unfold. Among them are most of the innovative instrumentalists, bandleaders, and composers who shaped the
music as it grew, and who kept its spirit of development alive and well nourished. The discography at the end of each profile will also guide you to CDs to hear how each individual's music progressed.

Overview: In 1971, French jazz critics Philippe Carles and Jean-Louis Comolli co-wrote Free Jazz/Black Power, a treatise on the racial and political implications of jazz and jazz criticism. It remains a testimony to the long ignored encounter of radical African American music and French left-wing criticism. Carles and Comolli set out to defend a genre vilified by jazz critics on both sides of the Atlantic by exposing the new sound's ties to African American culture, history, and the political struggle that was raging in the early 1970s. The two offered a political and cultural history of black presence in the United States to shed more light on the dubious role played by jazz criticism in racial oppression.

cvllos, there is an out-of-print book - "Ella Fitzgerald: A Biography Of The First Lady Of Jazz" – August 22, 1995 by Stuart Nicholson. A copy of it has never come my way but Amazon are offering second-hand copies.
